Most Anticipated PC Games for 2018

By: Leala Ulrich, Community Manager

With runaway hits like PUBG and Fortnite dominating the headlines in 2017, PC gaming is as popular as ever. This was even the year I took the leap and upgraded my gaming computer, after years of playing on an under-performing laptop. To me, it seems to me that trendy VR games aren't really the future of gaming, but rather online co-op adventures on the PC are. For those of us who still enjoy a good online RPG experience, there are a few gems to look forward to playing in 2018.

Sea of Thieves

This adorable pirate game was one of the highlights of E3 this year. Since my days of playing Puzzle Pirates back in the early 2000s, I've always wanted another pirate game with the ability to truly work with a crew of other players. There have been lots of fun pirate games, but none have ever had a really high quality online co-operative experience. Sea of Thieves seems to have all the features I'd love to see including a huge shared open world, tons of quests and even cross-platform crews for your ship. The stylized graphics and variety in character design are also a stand-out feature. You can even customize your character to have a hook hand or classic pirate peg leg! If you are interested in the game, Rare's YouTube channel has a ton of developer updates and behind the scenes videos to get you excited before release. Sea of Thieves is available for pre-order now and will officially release on PC and Xbox One on March 20, 2018.

Vampyr

Another highlight from E3 was the announcement of Focus Home Interactive's new game, Vampyr. If you are like me, you are totally over the zombie game trend that saturated the industry the past few years. It's time we had a new type of monster to fight (or be, in this case) and I'm on board with it being vampires. In this open world RPG you'll be playing as a newly created vampire, Dr. Jonathan Reid. By day you'll be helping the flu-ravaged citizens of 1918 London, and by night, well, you'll probably be feeding on those same citizens. Quite the dilemma, wouldn't you say? The game promises that your decisions will shape the story and how the characters around you interact, which is always one of my favorite aspects of an RPG. The only thing that would make it better is if you could customize your character and play as a female vampire. Vampyr will be available on PC, Xbox One and PS4 in the spring of 2018.

Anthem

In what looks to be EA's challenge to Destiny 2, Anthem is an open-world co-operative action RPG. Your character is a freelancer who hops in an array of mobile armor suits called Javelins and groups up with 3 of your friends to take on missions and fight baddies. The graphics and environments we've seen in trailers so far look really beautiful, with a full range of motion as you fly throughout the world. For those who like progression-based games, you'll be able to grow more powerful as you customize and craft your gear and affect the world with your team's actions. We don't know too much about the game yet, but if EA can avoid any loot-box missteps and keep the gameplay fresh and fun, Anthem could be a really solid addition to the online multiplayer scene. It is scheduled to release for PC, Xbox One and PS4 in the fall of 2018.

Dauntless

Currently in closed beta, Dauntless by Phoenix Labs is another co-op action RPG coming in 2018. In Dauntless, you'll group up with your friends to hunt giant monsters called behemoths. These big baddies come in all sorts of shapes and sizes from giant dinosaurs to a huge owl-bear called a shrike. Each of the behemoths has different abilities and strategies to defeat them that you and your friends will need to learn before you go out on the hunt. The environmental and character design is refreshingly colorful and stylized. And since it will be free to play, I look forward to trying out this hack and slash adventure with friends.

Battle for Azeroth

Like clockwork, World of Warcraft players can expect a new expansion to the game every other year. And in 2018, the newest WoW expansion will be Battle for Azeroth. This latest addition will focus on the never-ending battle between the Horde and Alliance in the new zones of Kul Tiras and Zandalar. The coolest new feature in this expansion will be the addition of six new allied races. After a bit of a faction grind, you'll be able to create your own character of that faction including the Highmountain Tauren, Lightforged Draenei, Zandalari Troll or Dark Iron Dwarf. The Void Elf and Nightborne are the most exciting options to me, as they bring the existing Night Elf and Blood Elf character models across factions. A new PVE mode called Warfronts is also being added, which allows you to join a group of 20 to siege an objective in a classic Warcraft RTS style battle. This expansion also comes with all the standard fare including new dungeons, raids, legendary armor and an increased level cap of 120. We don't have an official release date yet, but I expect to see Battle for Azeroth come to PC in late 2018.

A Good Year for Gaming

Trends in the game industry come and go, but next year looks to be a great one for fans of co-op online gameplay. I know I'm excited for a few more options of games to play with friends when we don't feel like another round of Overwatch. What do you think? Have any of these titles caught your eye or are you hyped for something else coming out next year? Hop over to Twitter and let us know which games you can't wait to play.
